Jan & Richard Boler

Both Jan and Richard started their brass playing for Tadley in North Hampshire, Jan at the age of 11 on Cornet and Richard at the age of 9 on Flugel (later switching to Euphonium following a ‘Nasty Squash Accident’).

Jan attended Cricklade College, Andover on the specialist music course and then went on to Trinity College of Music, to gain her GTCL and LTCL. After leaving college she taught Brass and Piano throughout Hampshire and still teaches at Wellow School.

After they married in 1986 they moved to Downton Band, Richard as 2nd Euphonium (and later Eb Bass) and Jan on Cornet, finishing as Principle. During their time there they saw Downton move up from 3rd section to Championship section nationally, and competed in the London Finals.

Following the birth of their second child Jan and Richard took a break from banding, but not being able to stay away for long, Jan joined Michelmersh in 2000 followed swiftly by Richard in 2001.

Jan and Richard have three children aged 17, 15, and 13, Henry playing percussion for Michelmersh and Hampshire and Connie and Meg playing in the Michelmersh Training Band and the Hampshire Training Band.
