TRIPLE TROPHY TRIUMPH FOR BAND
A journey to Weymouth through torrential rains and flooded roads to compete in the annual Wessex Brass Band Contest proved a very worthwhile venture for Michelmersh Silver Band at the weekend as it came away with no less than three major trophies. Under the baton of Musical Director Melvin White, the band’s performance of the test piece The Saga of Haakon the Good saw them crowned as Wessex First Section Champions, with principal cornet player, Jan Boler, winning the Maurice Woods Trophy for Best Cornet Player. The trio of trophies was completed with Melvin White being awarded the South Wilts Cup for the best musical interpretation of the score.
The trophies were the icing on the cake for four band members who were honoured with Wessex Brass Band Association long service certificates during the presentation ceremony. With over two hundred years service between them, Keith Morgan has completed an exceptional sixty two years of banding, David Parsons and Michael Topp fifty years each, and Josie Miell forty years.
The haul of trophies and awards has really put the band in the mood to party as it rehearses for its annual Christmas Concert in the Plaza Theatre on 15th December. Stuffed full with Christmas music, carols, a visit by the man in the red suit, and party fun, SLEIGHRIDE! promises to be an evening of fun and celebration for all the family. Tickets are available from the Heritage and Visitor Centre, Church Street, Romsey. 01794 512987 |
